Totally 90s Makeup Trends

Discman. Butterfly hair clips. Jelly shoes. Flip phones. Confused yet? Or are you one of the lucky kids who existed just before the internet turned the world on its head and internally screamed “that’s so 90s!”

The recent years have been looking a lot like a big 90s throwback. Super stylish TikTokers are tipping their bucket hats to the decade with their tie-dyes, cycling shorts, fanny packs and denim on denims. Young beauty vloggers are recreating superfly looks with frosty eyes, lip liners and body glitter. Thankfully, no sighting of the overarched thin eyebrows (yet). Even the media is giving us endless nostalgia with Friends on streaming, documentaries about Michael Jordan and Kurt Cobain, Drew Barrymore and Gwyneth Paltrow with their own beauty brands on YouTube.

Let’s rewind and recreate these iconic looks that defined the decade.

Shiny lips

The flavoured Lip Smacker gloss was the bomb then. The shiner and stickier, the better! Add a little sheen to your day with the Hank & Henry Lip Lustre Gloss in Duh One (lightly pigmented) or Unicorn Glow Luminous in Unicorn shade (purple pink). They’re moisturising, long-lasting and have non-sticky formula.

The lip liner

Lippie trends were wild then. It’s either your lip liner is way darker than your lipstick or your lipsticks were just a variety of burgundies and browns. Outline your lip with the Gosh Velvet Touch Lip Liner or LookX Velvet Lip Liner for that extra definition.

Dark lips everywhere

What did we say about those deep brown shades? A classic 90s move! But you can make it modern with the Carter Beauty Word Of Mouth Lipstick in Josephine and Gosh Velvet Touch Lipstick in Cinnamon. Both with intense colour and matte finish.

 Smudged eyes

It was peak Grunge era! And we fell for the panda eye, slept-in, rocker look on the girls and guys. Apply the Touch In Sol Style Sepia Gel Liner or Mii Cosmetics Defining Eye Pencil on your top and bottom lash lines and blend away. Don’t forget the plaid shirt around your waist!

Pretty tendrils

No matter the hairstyle, we were obsessed with framing our faces with pin-straight, curly or chunky tendrils. Pull it off with the vitamin-rich VoCê Style Me Cream. Let the hair tumble off your do for an effortless look – double barrettes and mini braids are optional.
